Daeth ein blaenoriaid ynghyd mewn Henaduriaeth yng nghapel Seilo yn Llambed rhyw fis yn ôl i gynnal cyfarfod i ordeinio deg blaenor newydd. Henaduriaeth Ceredigion a Gogledd Penfro yw un o’r tair henaduriaeth yn Sasiwn De Cymru. Mae hin fendigedig ystyried fod y drafodaeth a’r gweinyddu yn ein Henaduriaeth yn digwydd trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg. Yno, roedd yr iaith ar waith fel arfer.

Ond y tro hwn, roedd llawer ohonom yn llawn tristwch a siom wrth feddwl am bleidlais Cymru ychydig ddyddiau ynghynt. Roedd yno falchder hefyd am fod Ceredigion wedi pleidleisio o blaid aros yn Ewrop. Clywais bryderon a dicter nifer fawr ohonom; a heddwch, swyddi, tegwch yn y gweithle, addysg, y bunt a’r farchnad stoc, ein Cynulliad Cenedlaethol, statws y Gymraeg a’r cynnydd tywyll yn yr ymosodiadau hiliol yn gwasgu ar y meddwl. Gwelem hen gulni cysurus ein plentyndod yn ail godi ei ben.

Serch hynny, ymhlith pethau eraill, cawsom gyfarfod buddiol iawn yn enwedig wrth glywed y deg blaenor wrthi’n trafod eu profiadau, cyn cael eu derbyn trwy bleidlais a’u hordeinio gan Lywydd y Sasiwn.

Weithiau, pan fo Cymru mewn cynnwrf, mae angen inni i gyd i geisio creu pethau dibynadwy yn ein byd. Fel aelodau yn Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru, dyma’r adeg inni gofio’n gwreiddiau, a defnyddio ein heglwysi fel mannau agored i gynnig sicrwydd o fath i bawb, beth bynnag fo eu cred neu ffydd.

Cael ein hordeinio’n flaenoriaid yw’r anrhydedd fwyaf a ddaw inni, er bod llawer wedi ennill anrhydeddau uchel yn eu bywydau secwlar. Blaenor wyf innau fel gweinidog, ond fy mod wedi fy neilltuo i fugeilio a hyfforddi’r aelodau a gweinyddu’r sacramentau. Cyd flaenor neu weinidog yw’r Llywydd, a ddewiswyd gan y Sasiwn am flwyddyn.

Mae gan bob blaenor ei ddoniau unigryw. Dyma swyddogion ein henwad ni. Byddant yn gweithio gyda’u gweinidog fel aelodau o’r tîm sy’n gyfrifol am holl waith yr eglwys leol. Gwasanaethant ym mhwyllgorau a llysoedd ein henwad. Hwy yw arweinwyr ein heglwysi lleol yn eu hymwneud â’u cymunedau.

A gaf i gynnig un enghraifft o waith blaenoriaid eglwys i chwi? Roedd to capel o safon Gradd 2 yn Sir Benfro mewn cyflwr bregus ac wedi pob storm rhaid oedd ail osod y llechi rhydd yn eu lle. Ond trefnodd blaenoriaid yr eglwys i godi’r cyllid, ennill grantiau a delio gyda chyfreithwyr, penseiri, gwarchodwyr ystlumod a swyddogion eraill, er mwyn sicrhau fod to newydd yn cael ei roi ar yr hen gapel. Mae’r adeiladwyr bellach newydd gwblhau eu gwaith.

Cofiwch ein blaenoriaid a’u gwaith yn eich gweddïau.

Repairing Woodstock Chapel

Our elders met in a Presbytery meeting at Shiloh Chapel in Lampeter last month to ordain ten new elders. Ceredigion and North Pembrokeshire Presbytery is one of the three Presbyteries of our Association of South Wales. It is wonderful that most of the discussions and administration of our presbytery is conducted in through the medium of Welsh. So, at this meeting, the language was at work as usual.

This time, however, many were full of sadness and disappointment about the referendum vote in Wales a few days earlier. There was also some pride that Ceredigion had voted to remain in Europe. I heard the worries and disquiet of many colleagues; with peace, the fate of jobs, employment rights, education, the pound, the stock market, our National Assembly, the status of the Welsh language, and the dark shadow of the weekend’s racist attacks pressing on all our minds. We felt as though the old narrow mindedness of our childhood was once again raising its head.

In spite of this, amongst other things, we had a very fruitful meeting, especially as we heard the ten new elders discussing their experiences, before being accepted through a popular vote and ordained by the Moderator (Chair) of our Association.

Sometimes, when Wales is in turmoil, we need to try to create dependable things in our lives. As members of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, this is the time for us to remember our roots, and to use our churches as open places that provide a safe haven for everyone who seeks it, whatever their beliefs or faith.

Being ordained an elder is the highest honour that comes to us, though we may have won many awards in our secular lives. I am an elder as a minister, one that has been committed to shepherd and train the members and administer the sacraments. The Moderator is a fellow elder or a minister, one chosen by the Association for the year.

Each elder has his own unique skills. Together, they are the officers of our denomination. They work with their ministers as part of the team that takes care of all the work of the church. They serve in the committees and the courts of our denomination. They are the leaders of our local churches in their interaction with their communities.

May I offer one example of the elders’ duties? The roof at a grade 2 listed chapel in Pembrokeshire was in a poor state of repair, and after each storm loose slates had to be pegged back in place. So, the elders raised funds, obtained grants, and dealt with lawyers, architects, bat protection officers and other officials in order to secure a new roof for the building. The builders have now finished their work.

Please remember our elders and their work in your prayers.
